Websites should be designed with Search Engines in mind (SEO or Search Engine Optimisation). Your website needs to be found, anything less is a waste of time and money.
 
The design should be visually appealing but remember it shouldn't be too flashy because Search Engines (difficult creatures to understand) don't like too much flash... they can't seem to read it. Don't opt for a full page picture for your front page... it is like having a locked gate at the front door of your website! There is more to know before you pay someone to construct your website but I take time to explain in detail.
To keep things simple, why not begin with a "Starter" website....
